Cowan began his broadcast career in radio over three decades ago when he was still in high school, filing sports scores reports from the sidelines. He was the first college student put in Salt Lake City to broadcast the breaking news of wildfires in Utah’s west desert. Also, he was the region’s first LGBTQ anchor and one of the lead reporters on the Elizabeth Smart kidnapping case.
Cowan gained national attention for the accidental death of his four-year-old son, Wesley. That story forever changed the way he interacted with victims. CBS did a story about the experience of a reporter finding himself on the other end of the lens and his evolution to compassion in journalism.
Cowan reported for CNN and Studio B with Shepard Smith in Miami. He traveled to broadcast the stories of people who were impacted by Haiti’s natural disasters. He won Emmys and an Edward R. Murrow award in Las Vegas for his hours-long live broadcast on the night of the mass shooting at the Route 91 Harvest Festival.
Cowan served as a national reporter during the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, PyeongChang, South Korea, and Tokyo, Japan.
