Also, he was the region’s first LGBTQ anchor and one of the lead reporters on the Elizabeth Smart kidnapping case.

Cowan gained national attention for the accidental death of his four-year-old son, Wesley. That story forever changed the way he interacted with victims. CBS did a story about the experience of a reporter finding himself on the other end of the lens and his evolution to compassion in journalism.
