Van’s Weather Kids

Denton launched the Van’s Weather Kids segment in 1997. In 1999, he gave a presentation on the Weather Kids program to the national American Meteorological Society (AMS) Broadcast Conference in Orlando, Florida. Numerous other stations globally started the segment too. In 2017, he gave another presentation to the AMS for Van’s Weather Kids.

The Van’s Weather Kids segment has been a dream for him since he came to FOX8 as a guest when he was 15 years old. In October 1980, he had presented a winter forecast to WPTF in Raleigh, receiving an invitation to give the winter forecast on the air, even though they did not normally invite kids to be on the air. The highlight was his early forecast predicting the first snow on December 27, 1980, which he shared two months in advance. When snow did fall on that day, he was invited back to the station, which helped launch his television career. After realizing the significance of that experience, he decided to do the same for others.
