The condition led to kidney failure, requiring her to undergo 10 hours of dialysis each day while simultaneously caring for her newborn daughter in the NICU. Less than a year after Nora’s birth, Allred received a life-saving kidney transplant from her longtime friend and former high school classmate, Mike Zangara.
Today, she continues to receive preventative infusions to reduce the risk of aHUS recurrence following the severe pre-eclampsia that triggered the disease. Because of the immunosuppressive medications required after her transplant, she also faces an increased risk of infections, including COVID-19, as well as certain forms of cancer.
