Early career

Connell caught the weather bug in 1979 after a blizzard tore through his hometown on the eastern shore of Maryland, with almost two feet of snow with drifts up to five feet. It was a defining moment that pushed him toward a career in weather since it was every child’s dream to witness tons of snow and no school for a week.

While in 8th grade, Connell read that a new TV station was coming to town and needed a meteorologist. Thus, he went to the old drug store that was being remodeled into a television station, requesting to speak with the general manager at only 14 years old. Sharing that he wanted to do the weekend weather, he sat in the news director’s office and explained what he could do for them. They then asked him to write a resume, which he still holds today. The news director created a position for him, allowing him to research the high and low temperatures every week. There, he learned about the weather from meteorologists Greg Fishel, John Bulatewicz, and even Mike Seidel of Weather Channel fame

Connell secured his first on-air gig at the NBC station in Raleigh, where he gained some great experiences and some great guidance from many people along the way who helped him get to St. Louis in 1991.
